We make packaging for good
Our Purpose – we make packaging for good – is driven by our Core Values – Inclusion, Trust, Teamwork and Excellence – and underpinned by the three pillars of our sustainability strategy – Emissions, Ecology and Social.
In 2022, Ardagh Metal Packaging and Ardagh Glass Packaging (AMP and AGP) received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for near-term emissions reductions targets. You can learn more about our strategy, targets and projects throughout these pages.
As a signatory to the UN Global Compact (UNGC), our sustainability strategy is linked to specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our strategy takes a comprehensive approach aimed at embedding environmental, social, and economic considerations into our operations and decision-making processes. In 2024, we published our Sustainability Roadmap which depicts our progress and path forward.

Targets and metrics
2030 targets
AMP and AGP have committed to ambitious targets for emissions, waste, and water reduction. The emissions reduction targets for AMP and AGP and their respective value chains have been approved by the SBTi. This is in line with the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015, under which governments pledged to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Waste
AMP:
Zero waste to landfill by 2025*
AGP:
Zero waste to landfill by 2030*

Water withdrawal
AMP:
20% intensity reduction by 2030
AGP:
26% intensity reduction by 2030

Greenhouse gas
AMP and AGP:
100% renewable electricity by 2030
42% absolute Scope 1+2 reduction by 2030**
12.3% absolute Scope 3 reduction by 2030**

Emissions
AMP:
10% VOC emission intensity
reduction by 2030
AGP:
23% NOx emission intensity
reduction by 2030

*Zero waste to landfill for operation waste streams, where allowed by regulation

In 2023, we reduced our Scope 3 GHG emissions and VOC intensity below 2030 target levels despite significant business growth. This was achieved through increased recycled content, product lightweighting, and strategic investments. While scope 1 and 2 emissions rose, we expect that planned efficiency projects and renewable electricity agreements in Germany and Portugal will help reverse this trend. 75% of our facilities achieved zero waste to landfill, keeping us on track for 100% by 2025. We also made progress on water intensity reduction. With strong initiatives and partnerships, we remain committed to achieving our 2030 sustainability goals.
1 The Research Institute of Sweden (RISE) provided limited assurance of the acquisition, processing and aggregation of the quantitative data necessary to calculate the principal 2023 environmental and health & safety KPIs reported. 2 Based on current best available data and calculation methodology. We continuously assess and review our methodologies and the strength of our data sets. 3 Intensity metrics shown include can body production facilities only (excluding Huron, Ohio – since this facility produces both cans and ends), as water and VOC emissions from ends production is insignificant.

In 2023, AGP experienced mixed sustainability outcomes. While production curtailments contributed positively to certain metrics, such as GHG emissions, they negatively impacted others, like water intensity. AGP strengthened its renewable project pipeline, particularly in Europe, where more than 80% of our current electricity consumption will be covered by committed projects. AGP has a number of initiatives driving reductions ranging from the NextGen Furnace in Germany, global Zero Waste to Landfill campaigns (ZWTL) and water reduction programmes.
